Founded as Middlesbrough FC in 1876, the club have kept its iconic name throughout their history. Many of the locals will often call the side ‘Boro’, a common nickname that have been in use for decades. It derives as a shortened version of ‘Middlesbrough’.

Middlesbrough were created by members of the Middlesbrough Cricket Club at a meeting at the Albert Park Hotel in 1876. The cricketers aimed to stay fit in the winter months and therefore founded the club. According to Boro folklore, this happened at a Tripe Supper at the Corporation Hotel.

Middlesbrough currently play their home matches at Riverside Stadium. They moved into their new home in 1995, becoming at the time the largest stadium built in the UK for 70 years. The ground can hold 34,742 people with its capacity seeing an increase in 1998. The Boro have had plenty of previous homes in their existence. The most notable, Ayresome Park which hosted the club for nearly 100 years.

Middlesbrough training ground

Rockliffe Park has been Middlesbrough’s training ground since 1998. The club purchased the unused land in 1997 and redeveloped it into a training complex after extensive research. It opened on October 29, 1998, by Prime Minister Tony Blair with the complex costing £7 million to build. Rockliffe Park also houses the women’s side and the academy.
