Long-time Middlesbrough owner, Steve Gibson, elected Michael Carrick to be the club’s new manager in October 2022. The former England international took over a club that was just one point above the relegation zone after a horrific start.

Carrick’s debut season saw Middlesbrough move away from a potential relegation battle to qualify for the playoffs. Wilder had left the Riverside Stadium with Boro only 21st in the table. Yet the Championship outfit would finish the 2022/23 campaign in fourth before losing to Coventry in the playoffs.

Jonathan Woodgate rejoined the coaching staff at Middlesbrough following Carrick’s arrival as the new Boro manager. His arrival was a step back into the number two position for Woodgate having been manager of Middlesbrough for the 2019/20 season.

The former Boro man started his coaching career off at the club after his retirement. Under Steve Agnew, he became an assistant coach. The next few years saw his position vary until he became the permanent manager of Middlesbrough in June 2019. However, this spell was far from successful and he was sacked 12 months later with the club fighting relegation.

Woodgate briefly returned to management in the following campaign. Following the sacking of Jason Tindall, he was appointed as Bournemouth’s interim manager until the end of the season. Here, he reached the playoffs before crashing out to Brentford. Woodgate then left at the end of the campaign and was out of work until he rejoined Middlesbrough in 2022.

The younger brother of manager Michael Carrick, Graeme Carrick joined the Middlesbrough coaching staff in the summer of 2024 following the departure of Aaron Danks.

Graeme like his brother was also a talented footballer but injuries forced him down a different path, which saw him turn his attention to coaching.

The 39-year-old would go on to spend 15 years at the FA, working in various youth coaching and development roles. He would eventually leave the FA in 2022, being poached by Dan Ashworth to join Newcastle United – taking charge of their under-18 side.

Alan Fettis is another highly experienced member of Carrick’s backroom staff. Fettis started his career as a goalkeeping coach in 2007 at Derby. From here, he would join Cheltenham and Sunderland before moving to Manchester United in 2011.

At the Red Devils, he became the goalkeeping coach for the academy teams. In 2016, he was praised by three times Champions League winner Victor Valdes stating that without his guidance, he would have given up on football.

Fettis then briefly helped out with first-team duties in 2019 before he left to join Middlesbrough in 2022 under Chris Wilder.
