A player who left Middlesbrough as a free agent in 2022 is still without a club.
Middlesbrough seem to have a high player turnover most seasons.
Especially in this modern era as Middlesbrough strive to earn promotion to the Premier League, the club welcomes in new players every summer and seems to let go a lot at the end of every season.
And one player who was let go a couple of seasons ago now was Sammy Ameobi; the now 31-year-old joined on a one-year deal for the 2021/22 season but injury meant that he eventually left as a free agent, without ever making a first-team appearance for the club.
Sammy Ameobi before Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough certainly wasn’t a high point in Ameobi’s career, and it may well prove to be the final chapter of his playing days too.
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Ameobi rose through the Magpies’ ranks alongside older brother Shola, eventually going on to make 70 total appearances for the club, with 52 of those coming in the Premier League.
The winger then had spells with Bolton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest, making 91 and 81 appearances for each club respectively, and he looked like a shrewd signing for Boro when he was brought in by Neil Warnock.
But a knee injury meant that Ameobi hit the sidelines straight away, not playing a single minute of football before leaving the Riverside as a free agent, and not returning to the game since.

What next for Sammy Ameobi
After nearly two years out of the game and very little news on the player, it seems like Ameobi may well have called time on his career.
On his day, he was a very tricky customer, capable of scoring and creating goals and beating some of the best full-backs that the Football League had to offer.
And he would no doubt have suited the Warnock mantra at Middlesbrough, but for an unfortunate and major injury seemingly putting a halt to his career.
At 31, he could well make a surprise come back, and if he didn’t have sustained the injury he did, he could still be playing at a top level now, even for this current Boro side.
Now managed by Michael Carrick, Middlesbrough are still vying for promotion to the Premier League.
Though it’s tough right now with the club having lost key attacker Morgan Rogers on deadline day, now finding themselves in 12th place of the table but still just four points outside the top six.
Up next is a home game vs Bristol City this weekend.
