Middlesbrough have had a mixed start to the current Championship season under Michael Carrick.

Expectations were high at the Riverside ahead of Boro’s season opener on August 10th.

Middlesbrough were predicted to finish second in the Championship by Opta, with only Leeds United placing above them.

This came after Michael Carrick was able to guide his side to a run of one defeat in 12 at the end of 2023/24.

The Teesiders continued that excellent run into the opening weekend when an Emmanuel Latte Lath penalty saw Middlesbrough beat Swansea City 1-0.

The North East outfit followed that result up with a massive victory over Leeds United in the League Cup.

However, the Reds came crashing back down to earth this past Saturday when Middlesbrough lost 1-0 against Derby County.

Despite the defeat to the Rams, Middlesbrough can still have an excellent 2024/25 and could still break a number of staggering Championship records…

Five Championship records Middlesbrough can still break

The Championship is always a hotly contested league, well-known for its competitive nature with very few teams able to dominate.

However, there have been a couple of teams over the years who have stood out from the pack and set some staggering records.

Boro News have taken a look at five of those records, all of which Middlesbrough can still break in 2024/25.

Most points: Reading

Reading dominated the second division in 2005/2006, earning a whopping 106 points – a feet Middlesbrough can still break even with their one loss this term.

Most wins: Reading and Leicester City

This record was first broken in 2005/06 by Reading, who picked up 31 wins en route to Championship promotion.

Leicester City have since achieved the same number of wins in the 2013/14 and 2023/24 seasons. Boro need another 30 victories to match that feat in the current campaign.

Most wins in a row: Reading, Aston Villa and Burnley

The current record for most wins in a row in the Championship is 10, something Middlesbrough can still achieve with 44 matches left to play.

Reading set the record in 2005/06 while Aston Villa and Burnley have since matched it in 2018/19 and 2022/23.

Most home wins: Reading and Watford

Of course, Reading also have this record, sharing it with Watford after they both won 19 of their 23 home matches in 2005/06 and 2020/21 respectively.

Middlesbrough are one-for-one in their home games so far in 2024/25 – just another 19 wins to go.

Most away wins: West Ham United and Norwich City

Finally, a record not held by Reading. West Ham and Norwich were able to secure 15 wins in 23 matches during the 2011/12 and 2020/21 seasons respectively.

After Boro lost their opening away fixture to Derby, they now have to win 16 of their last 22 on the road this term to break the record.
