Former Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock has spoken out on the possibility of becoming the next England head coach.
Middlesbrough legend Gareth Southgate saw his time as England manager come to an end this week.
After the heartbreak of Euro 2024, Southgate confirmed on July 16th that he was stepping down as the Three Lions’ head coach.
While England did not win a trophy under Southgate, they enjoyed their most successful period in decades.
The former Boro captain took England to two European Championship finals and their first World Cup semi-final since 1990.
The FA now face the tough task of replacing Southgate, and another ex-Boro manager has spoken out on calls for him to take up the role.
Neil Warnock responds to England rumours
Neil Warnock made the move to the Riverside Stadium in July 2020. His first season at the helm saw Boro finish 10th in the Championship.
The veteran manager was then sacked in November 2021, with Middlesbrough sat 15th in the second division.
Warnock has held several roles since leaving the North East and is currently a member of Torquay United’s board of directors.
However, following news of Southgate’s departure, fans have been calling up Warnock to be named as the next England manager.
The 75-year-old took to X/Twitter to respond to these calls in his typically comical fashion.
He wrote: “Thank you for all the msgs I have received about the England job, but I am committed to @TUFC1899 for next season”
Could Michael Carrick become England manager
Since the disastrous reign of Fabio Capello, England have preferred to appoint English coaches as their managers.
However, there are not too many quality options to pick from at present.
Former players like Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard have struggled to replicate the success they had as a player in the management world.
So far, though, Michael Carrick has impressed during his short stint as manager of Middlesbrough.
It is unlikely Carrick will be considered to replace Southgate, but if he were to get Boro back in the Premier League and do well in the top flight, a national team appointment could be in the 42-year-old’s future.
