A stat highlighted by Kieran Scott shows why Middlesbrough should win promotion to the Premier League in 2024/25.

Middlesbrough will have aspirations of Premier League promotion heading into the 2024/25 campaign.

The Teessides last plied their trade in the top flight of English football back in 2017 and have struggled in their battle to secure a return.

Under Michael Carrick, though, Boro should be confident of mounting a proper promotion push this time around.

The North East outfit have reached the play-off semi-finals and finished eighth in Carrick’s previous two seasons at the helm.

Now, after a positive start to the 2024 summer transfer window and the injury crisis from last season over, a top-six finish should be the target for Middlesbrough this term.

Kieran Scott highlights stat that shows why Middlesbrough will win promotion

Middlesbrough failed to make the playoffs in 2023/24 for a couple of reasons.

Key players like Chuba Akpom, Ryan Giles and Cameron Archer all left the club after featuring heavily in 2022/23.

In turn, Carrick was forced to bring in new players and get them accustomed to his style of play. This inevitably took some time and saw Boro fail to win their opening five league games.

As well as having to fit new players into the team, Middlesbrough had an injury crisis, with the Teessiders having an average of 6.5 players missing every game.

Head of Football Kieran Scott discussed these problems in an interview recently but was quick to highlight a positive stat from the end of the campaign.

Boro picked up the most points in the Championship from March 1 to the end of the season, a stat that Scott believes shows Boro are on the right track, as per Teesside Live.

He said: “Injuries caused a massive setback, every time we made a step forward injuries put us back and Michael could rarely select his strongest starting XI.

“We finished the season well. I had a stat sent to me from a few days ago – from March 1 to the end of the season we picked up the most points in the league.

“It shows we were on the right track at the end of the season but it was just a bit too late.”

Can Middlesbrough win promotion in 2024/25

As the stat highlighted by Scott showed, once Carrick was able to embed the 2023 signings and negate the injury crisis somewhat, Middlesbrough were one of the best teams in the Championship.

Another factor working in Boro’s favour this season is the teams who have come down from the Premier League.

Burnley, Sheffield United, and Luton Town do not pose the same threat Leicester City, Southampton and Leeds United did the campaign prior.

Granted, Leeds will be in the division once more in 2024/25 but a number of their better players are expected to move on after their play-off final defeat to the Saints.

As a result, if they can keep up their form from the end of 2023/24, Middlesbrough should have a very good chance of securing promotion in the coming campaign.
