Middlesbrough legend Gareth Southgate now in contention for huge Premier League job

Middlesbrough fans will certainly be more familiar with Gareth Southagte than most.

His association with the club first began in 2001. That came when the defender joined the club from Aston Villa for £6.5million.

Southagate then spent the final five years of his playing career with the club. During that time, he made 204 appearances in all competitions for ‘Boro.

He also helped the club to their first ever major honour, lifting the League Cup in 2004. After ending his playing career in 2006, Southgate then spent the next three years managing Middlesbrough.

However, his time with the club would come to an end in October 2009. Having been relegated from the Premier League earlier that year, he was then somewhat controversially sacked while the club sat 4th in the Championship table.

Since then, Southgate has of course gone on to take over the role of England manager. Under him, they have reached the 2018 World Cup semi finals, Euro 2020 final, and 2022 World Cup quarter finals.

Now though, it seems as though the former Middlesbrough man could be in line for a big opportunity in the Premier League.

Gareth Southgate in contention for Manchester United job

According to a report from ESPN, Southgate is now being considered as a potential future manager of Manchester United.

It is thought that no decision has yet been made over the future of current Red Devils boss Erik Ten Hag.

However, the club are assessing their options in case the Dutchman does leave Old Trafford at the end of this season.

Southgate, who has a contract with England until the end of the calendar year, is among those being explored as a potential replacement for Ten Hag.

Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank, who currently manage Premier League duo Brighton and Brentford respectively, are also named as contender for the job.

Gareth Southgate update will interest Middlesbrough fans

This update on Southgate will no doubt raise a few eyebrows among Middlesbrough supporters.

As a former ‘Boro man who had a long connection with the club, it will be of interest to fans to see if he can succeed in such a high profile role.

It could be argued that this is an appealing opportunity for Southgate as well. Manchester United is obviously a club with the ambition to win trophies.

The chance to be the one to do that would no doubt be tempting for any potential managerial appointment.

However, given it does feel as though he has underachieved with this England team at times – given the resources available to him and situations they have been in – you wonder if he would be the best fit for the job.

Even so, with a Manchester United legend in Michael Carrick currently in charge at The Riverside Stadium, seeing Southgate in charge at Old Trafford would be an interesting parallel for Middlesbrough fans.
