Forgotten Middlesbrough man could be a secret weapon for Michael Carrick in 2024/25

The Middlesbrough player has previously excelled at the club but fell out of favour in the 2023/24 season.

Boro will be looking to improve on their eighth-place finish from 2023/24 when the new Championship campaign gets underway next month.

Michael Carrick has transformed Middlesbrough into a promotion-challenging side since his arrival at the Riverside in 2022.

Their 2023/24 campaign was hampered by a large overturn of players and persistent injury issues throughout the season.

However, Carrick and Kieran Scott have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the bulk of Boro’s business is done early this summer, allowing new additions plenty of time to settle in.

Luke Ayling, Delano Burgzorg, and Aidan Morris have already completed permanent transfers to Middlesbrough this year.

All three players should boost the club’s chances of promotion in the forthcoming campaign.

Riley McGree can be secret Middlesbrough weapon in 2024/25

While the new signings are all expected to help Middlesbrough in their push for a Premier League return, Carrick should look to a current Boro star to aid in this goal.

The player in question is Riley McGree, who became something of an afterthought in 2023/24.

McGree joined the Teessiders in January of 2022 and played a key role in Boro finishing fourth in 2022/23.

The Australian scored six and assisted three in 43 league games and was labelled a ‘talented lad’ by Carrick, as per the Yorkshire Post.

He said: “He is a talented lad and we will all be watching out for him at the World Cup.”

However, thanks to injury issues and international commitments, McGree played just 22 Championship games last term.

But with McGree back in training and no tournament midway through the upcoming season, Carrick should aim to make the 25-year-old a regular feature once more.

McGree can solve key Middlesbrough issue

Heading into 2024/25, Middlesbrough have something of a problem in the left-wing area.

Sam Greenwood returned to Leeds United in May after his loan spell and Sammy Silvera has also left the Riverside for Portsmouth.

In turn, Boro are short of left-wing options, with new signing Burgzorg currently the only quality player for that position.

However, while McGree is a natural central midfielder, he has excelled on the left before.

2022/23 saw him make 24 appearances on the left side during what was arguably his best stint as a Boro player.

As a result, Carrick should aim to make McGree a regular feature once more and have him compete with Burgzorg.
