Luke Ayling comments show how Middlesbrough have avoided 2023 transfer mistake

Recent comments from summer signing Luke Ayling highlight how Middlesbrough have avoided a transfer mistake from the 2023 window.

Steve Gibson brought Michael Carrick to the Riverside Stadium in October 2022 with hopes of Premier League promotion.

Middlesbrough are yet to return to the top flight and are gearing up for the 2024/25 Championship season.

However, there has certainly been progress since Carrick joined Boro from Manchester United.

The former midfielder was able to guide the Teessiders to a fourth-place finish in 2022/23, losing to Coventry City in the play-off semi-finals.

2023/24 did not go as well for the North East outfit, who finished four points outside of the top six.

Part of the reason for this was injury issues, with three players still working their way back to fitness ahead of the new season.

Transfer overhaul cost Middlesbrough promotion

Another key factor in Boro failing to win promotion last term was the large overhaul of first-team players at the club in the summer of 2023.

Key stars such as Chuba Akpom, Ryan Giles, Cameron Archer, and Aaron Ramsey all left Boro in that window.

Middlesbrough made 15 signings under Kieran Scott during 2023/24 to replace them.

As was to be expected, this massive influx of new talent saw the North East outfit struggle for consistency in the early stages of last season.

Middlesbrough failed to win their opening five matches. Just one win and a draw from those fixtures would have earned Carrick’s men a play-off place.

Luke Ayling comments show Middlesbrough have avoided 2023 mistake

But with just over one month of the 2024 summer transfer window left, it is clear Middlesbrough have learned from their mistakes.

So far, Boro have only signed three new first-team players this summer; Delano Burgzorg, Aidan Morris, and Luke Ayling.

The latter of that trio spent the second half of last season on loan at the Riverside, meaning he is already familiar with the manager and his teammates.

Now, as per Teesside Live, Ayling has been speaking about how Boro only need to embed two new faces this summer.

He said: “This summer, because I was here last year, we’re only needing to bed two new players in at the moment.

“The boys are feeling great, the squad looks in great condition and everyone is flying fit. There are a few young lads stepping up and doing great as well. So the squad feels like it’s in a great place.

“The board and the gaffer have done a great job building that, bringing together a good group of players that should be capable of getting through a full Championship season.”

Ayling is right to praise Gibson and Carrick as now Middlesbrough have a squad that is largely familiar with the manager’s system, they should be able to hit the ground running in 2024/25 and make a proper promotion push.
