Six players who could still leave Middlesbrough in 2024 summer transfer window

There are a number of players who could still leave Middlesbrough before the close of the 2024 summer transfer window.

Middlesbrough have been active on the transfer front this summer with several incomings and outgoings already taking place.

Steven Gibson has acted swiftly to back Michael Carrick in the transfer market with the signings of Luke Ayling, Aidan Morris, and Delano Burgzorg.

On the exit front, meanwhile, Paddy McNair, Liam Roberts, and Hayden Coulson have all left the club permanently.

Winger Sammy Silvera has also departed the Riverside, joining Portsmouth on loan for the 2024/25 season.

After losing several key players in the summer of 2023, Boro will no doubt be keen to keep hold of their top stars this time around.

However, there are a number of names who could still leave the club before deadline day on August 30th.

With this in mind, Boro News have taken a look at seven players who could leave Middlesbrough in the current window.

Middlesbrough goalkeepers expected to leave

Heading into the 2024/25 season, it is clear that at least one, more likely two, of Boro’s goalkeepers will need to be moved on.

Seny Dieng is expected to continue in his role as the North East outfit’s number one after an impressive debut season on Teesside.

Jamie Jones’ place as the club’s third-choice option is also likely to be maintained after he returned to pre-season training late last month.

However, Boro now have three keepers who are battling it out to be the backup to Dieng.

That role went to Tom Glover last term but Sol Brynn and Zach Hemming have now returned to the club after loan spells.

Brynn and Hemming are likely expecting first-team minutes in 2024/25 after being first-choice while at Leyton Orient and St Mirren.

Glover also has aspirations of playing more as he aims to maintain his place in the Australian national team.

Of the trio, it makes the most sense to move on Glover and Brynn. The former was signed for free last year and Boro can turn a quick profit on him, while Brynn didn’t really do enough at Leyton Orient to warrant him becoming Boro’s second choice.

Anfernee Dijksteel put up for sale

Anfernee Dijksteel joined Middlesbrough from Charlton Athletic in 2019 and has been a useful asset during his time on Teesside.

However, since the arrival of Carrick in the Boro dugout, the 27-year-old has seen his game time slashed.

He made 20 Championship appearances last term but completed 90 minutes on just two occasions.

Ayling’s return to Middlesbrough this summer means Dijksteel has fallen even further down the pecking order in the North East.

The former Leeds man, Tommy Smith, and Rav van den Berg are all preferred ahead of the Dutchman to slot in at right-back.

Reports last month claimed Middlesbrough have made Dijksteel available for sale this summer and an exit would likely suit all parties at this stage.

A shakeup in midfield

The arrival of Morris from Columbus has opened the door for a couple of Middlesbrough midfielders to leave the club this summer.

Dan Barlaser has received transfer interest from a European side, while Riley McGree is now in the final 12 months of his contract.

Given Boro have just signed Morris and Carrick began to hand academy starlet Law McCabe minutes at the back end of the previous campaign, Boro should look to move the aforementioned duo on.

Barlaser was previously labelled as ‘fantastic’ by Carrick, as per Teesside Live. But he was a fringe player last term and Boro would be better served selling him and allowing McCabe a more clear pathway into the first-team.

McGree, meanwhile, has been a key figure for the Reds in the past but injuries and international duty limited his minutes in 2023/24 and Boro got on fine without him.

And given his contract situation, it makes sense for Gibson to cash in on him now, rather than losing the Australian for nothing in a year.

Matthew Hoppe set to leave Middlesbrough

When Middlesbrough signed Matthew Hope from RCD Mallorca, expectations were high.

The promising striker previously impressed with FC Schalke 04 and was already a United States international.

However, he has made just six senior appearances for Boro and endured a couple of disappointing loan spells since then.

The Northern Echo reported last month that Hoppe will leave the club in the current window, a move which makes a lot of sense.
