Why Michael Carrick should still have Ryan Giles transfer hope, Middlesbrough need him back

Middlesbrough tried and failed to sign Ryan Giles during the 2024 summer transfer window.

One of the longest-running transfer sagas at the Riverside Stadium over the summer involved Ryan Giles.

The left-back shone in the North East during the 2022/23 campaign when on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, assisting 11 in 45 Championship appearances.

Then, with Alex Bangura injured again and Lukas Engel underperforming, Boro went in search of left-back reinforcements during the most recent window.

Middlesbrough were linked with Giles for much of the summer amid uncertainty around his Hull City future.

Reports emerged in early July that stated Boro were preparing to bid for Giles.

His return would have been a major boost for the Reds and no doubt helped in their promotion push.

However, Hull’s owner then confirmed a move for Giles was not on the cards and that he would be staying in Yorkshire.

Middlesbrough should have Ryan Giles transfer hope

While a move for the 24-year-old did not come to pass over the summer, Middlesbrough should still have hope they can complete a deal in the near future.

Giles started the campaign as the Tigers’ primary left-sided defender but after a run of four games without a win, he played just 45 minutes against Sheffield United and was an unused substitute when Hull beat Stoke City last week.

While not great for Hull or Giles, this could be a big boost for Middlesbrough.

As the defender has seemingly fallen out of favour with Tim Walter, Hull may now be much more open to selling the defender in one of the upcoming transfer windows than they were last month, especially as he set them back around £4m and a club of their level would no doubt love to recoup some of that money before his value goes down any further due to poor displays and or a lack of minutes.

It is certainly something Kieran Scott and Michael Carrick should be keeping an eye on going forward.

Middlesbrough must complete Ryan Giles transfer in January

If Giles continues to underperform for Hull over the next few months, January will be the perfect time for Boro to reignite their interest.

The Tigers are unlikely to keep hold of a player who is struggling and given Middlesbrough’s previous interest, they should be more than willing to take the defender off Hull’s hands.

And though he has not been at his best in 2024/25 so far, Carrick already knows how to get the best out of Giles – as we saw two years ago when he enjoyed his best-ever season in terms of goal contributions.

A fresh approach for the former Wolves ace is needed as it would solve Boro’s left-back problem.

Engel has been disappointing this season while Neto Borges was ‘exposed’ during Sunderland versus Middlesbrough.

This leaves the Teessiders without any real quality at left-back until at least January when they should go back in for Giles, who could be available for a cut-price fee given he has fallen down the pecking order at the MKM Stadium.
