Middlesbrough have made a £57m PSR loss but are still able to spend money this summer if Steve Gibson is willing.
Middlesbrough have had a lot to thank their long-serving owner Steve Gibson for over the years.
The Boro-born chairman saved the club from liquidation in 1986 and became the majority owner of the Teessiders in 1993.
Gibson’s tenure at the Riverside Stadium has been full of highs and lows, with several relegations accompanying a League Cup triumph in 2004 and a few historic runs in Europe.
At present, Middlesbrough are aiming to secure promotion from the Championship under Michael Carrick following their latest relegation in 2016/17.
Boro have never been the richest club in English football but, for the most part, have been backed by Gibson.
We have already seen the Middlesbrough chairman’s support in the current window, with three new players arriving in the North East, the latest being Aidan Morris.

Middlesbrough can spend money this summer despite £57m PSR loss
Middlesbrough have spent around £5.5m on signing three players so far this summer in Luke Ayling, Delano Burgzorg, and Morris.
This spending comes despite the fact that over the last three years, the Teessiders have a PSR (profit and sustainability rules) loss of £57m.
Clubs are supposed to make no more than a £39m PSR loss over three years but football finance expert Kieran Maguire has explained why Boro still have money to spend despite the loss, as per The Price of Football podcast.
He said: “In the Championship you’re allowed a £39 million PSR loss over three years. Now Boro made £57m of losses over the last three seasons. But I reckon they have got a category one Academy so I think I can add back £18 million on that, they have got infrastructure costs of £9m so that’s £27m.
“So that takes the £57 million down to £30 million. But the way that it works is the oldest season drops out . The year ended 30th of June 2022 is effectively dropping out because we’re now in the 24/25 season and in the case of Boro, that was the season they made their biggest losses.
“So I think that a Boro do have a bit of wiggle room if the owner Steve Gibson, who’s been a very generous benefactor to the club over the years, if the owner wants to put in the money.”

What Middlesbrough should spend money on this summer
After signing a midfielder, right-back, and winger so far this summer, a striker remains a priority for Middlesbrough in the current window.
Emmanuel Latte Lath scored 16 goals in 30 league games last season but adding a quality back-up option would be a wise move.
Elsewhere, while Morris has just signed, Boro could do with some extra legs in midfield going into 2024/25.
Jonny Howson is 36 years old and coming to the end of his playing career, while Lewis O’Brien and Paddy McNair left the club this month.
Another winger could also be a target for Boro after Sammy Silvera joined Portsmouth on loan, leaving Carrick short of options on the flank.
