Middlesbrough’s goalkeeping shopping spree continues, with the signing of Jamie Jones on a one-year deal.

Jones, a free agent after leaving League One Wigan Athletic, replaces Liam Roberts who has joined Barnsley on a season-long loan.

Roberts made it clear to boss Michael Carrick that he wanted first-team football this campaign, opening the door for Jones’ arrival.

34-year-old Jones comes with bags of EFL experience with over 500 senior appearances made in his career.

The signing of Jones coupled with Roberts’ exit completes Boro’s overhaul of the goalkeeping department this summer.

Seny Dieng and Tom Glover signed for the club earlier in the window, with Sol Brynn and Zack Hemming going out on loan to Swindon Town and St Mirren respectively.

What has Jones said about his departure from Wigan Athletic?

Jones joined the Latics back in August 2017 from Stevenage and went on to make over a century of appearances during his six-year stint at the DW Stadium.

Boss Shaun Maloney wanted to keep Jones, however, the ‘keeper confirmed this week that he’d be moving on.

Jones posted on social media, and said, “From the day I joined Wigan I knew straight away how amazing the club was – a close-knit family club with everything a player could wish for.

“I have made so many amazing memories at this football club that will live with me for the rest of my life.

“Wigan will always hold a special place in my heart and I am a fan for life. Thank you.”

Jones will look to make his debut for Boro tonight, as they travel to face fellow Championship side Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.
