Middlesbrough are expected to agree a deal with a player who is currently a free agent and called Boro a ‘massive club’.

Middlesbrough have been one of the more active sides on the transfer front in the Championship this season.

Michael Carrick guided Boro to an eighth-place finish last term but the new summer additions should boost their chances of promotion in 2024/25.

After assisting eight in 19 league games while on loan at the Riverside in 2023/24, Luke Ayling has returned to the club on a free.

Ayling’s arrival was followed by Delano Burgzorg, who was on loan at Huddersfield Town last season, joining permanently from Mainz 05.

Aidan Morris then made the move from Columbus Crew before Middlesbrough beat two Premier League sides to the signing of Harley Hunt.

The incomings are not expected to stop there, however, with Hull City’s owner willing to let Ryan Giles join Boro and a new striker remaining a priority for the Teessiders.

Jamie Jones expected to sign new contract with Middlesbrough

Another player who is expected to sign for Middlesbrough this summer is goalkeeper, Jamie Jones.

Jones joined Middlesbrough on a free transfer from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2023.

After signing for the North East outfit, the 35-year-old labelled Middlesbrough a ‘massive club’, as per Teesside Live.

He said: “I had a few options available but then my agent called me and told me Middlesbrough had been on the phone.

“Once that option came about it was something that I had to really consider.

“It’s a massive club that has everything going right about it and I just couldn’t turn that down.”

Despite his praise for the club, Jones failed to make a single appearance for Boro, being used as the third-choice keeper behind Seny Dieng and Tom Glover.

Jones’ contract expired last month and he is now a free agent. But the Northern Echo report that the shot-stopper is part of the Middlesbrough squad in Portugal and is expected to sign a new deal this summer.

Middlesbrough need to sell goalkeeper this summer

With Jones set to return to the Riverside in 2024/25, Middlesbrough have some decisions to make on the goalkeeper front.

Dieng was Boro’s number one last term and is expected to maintain that role in the forthcoming season.

Glover was the number two but he is now facing competition from Sol Brynn and Zach Hemming.

The duo spent 2023/24 out on loan, with Hemming in particular impressing for St Mirren.

Having five senior keepers competing for two places is not sensible and one or two of the aforementioned names will need to be moved on in the current window.
