Middlesbrough may not stop at just one new signing on transfer deadline day.
Boro’s main priority going into the final day of the 2024 transfer window was a new centre-back.
Michael Carrick has seen his side fail to win any of their last three games in all competitions, with injury issues a key reason why.
Dael Fry, Darragh Lenihan, Rav van den Berg and most recently George McCormick, have joined the injury list over the last few months.
Middlesbrough now face taking on Cardiff City with Matt Clarke once again their only fit senior centre-half.
Luke Ayling has filled in alongside Clarke recently but Boro’s defensive display, especially in the 5-0 hammering at Stoke City, have been concerning.
In turn, it came as little surprise when news broke that Middlesbrough are expected to sign George Edmundson from Ipswich Town.
A new centre-back is not the only addition the Teessiders could make on Friday, however.

Middlesbrough make approach for Liverpool winger Ben Doak
In something of a surprising update, it now appears as though Middlesbrough are trying to add another winger to their squad today.
Sky Sports News have reported on Friday afternoon that along with Hull City, Boro are pushing to sign Ben Doak from Liverpool.
The news was shared on Sky Sports’ official X/Twitter account, with the reporter saying: “We understand Hull and Middlesbrough are pushing to sign Liverpool winger Ben Doak on loan
“It’s understood Liverpool and the 18-year-old are deciding which option would be better suited for his development.
“Promising a prospect for the future for Scotland as well and either Hull or Middlesbrough may secure his services.”
Why are Middlesbrough trying to sign Ben Doak
Doak is a right-winger and has spent the majority of his limited playing career in that role.
After breaking into the Reds’ first team last year, Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish dubbed Doak ‘brilliant’, as per footballscotland.
The 18-year-old has since made 10 senior appearances for the Merseyside outfit but is yet to score or assist for them.
Doak also had a brief loan spell in Scotland with Celtic but only made two appearances for the Hoops.
Middlesbrough are well-stocked in the right-wing area, especially once Marcus Forss returns from injury, so Boro trying to land the Liverpool gem is something of a strange move.
