Middlesbrough have identified a late potential replacement for the outgoing Morgan Rogers.

Middlesbrough look set to suffer a late transfer blow with Rogers thought to be closing in on a permanent move to Aston Villa before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline.

For Michael Carrick, it’s obviously a blow. But he looks set to be backed by owner Steve Gibson once more, with Boro having reportedly identified their replacement for Rogers.

TEAMtalk are reporting that Middlesbrough fancy a late move for Oxford United’s tricky winger Tyler Goodrham, but so too do Boro’s Championship rivals Bristol City, Coventry City, and Hull City.

Middlesbrough eyeing up late Morgan Rogers replacement

Rogers only joined last summer. But after an impressive first half of the season which has seen him score seven goals and assist eight more in all competitions, he’s now primed for an exciting move to Aston Villa.

It should net Middlesbrough a tidy profit after buying Rogers from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee last summer, and the club could put some of that profit to use on a move for Goodrham who’s scored six and assisted three more in 27 League One outings for Oxford United this season.

The 20-year-old, who also represents Republic of Ireland at U21s level, began his career in the non-league before joining Oxford ahead of last season.

Tyler Goodrham could be long-term answer to Boro woes

Losing Rogers is a huge blow for Middlesbrough, and to lose him so late in the window will be frustrating too.

But Goodrham, described as ‘outstanding’ by former Oxford United boss Karl Robinson, looks like a good potential option for Boro.

However, he’ll no doubt be viewed as a longer-term replacement for Rogers; whether or not he can come in and bolster Boro’s promotion bid right away remains to be seen, given his lack of Championship experience.

So for Boro, Goodrham might be one potential signing today, but it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Carrick tells the club he wants a last-minute loan player to come in and directly replace Rogers’ quality in the XI.

It’s looking like a potentially busy day for Middlesbrough.
