Middlesbrough have confirmed their seventh signing of the 2024 summer transfer window.

After a long wait, Middlesbrough have finally added a new left-back to their squad for the 2024/25 season.

Alex Bangura’s latest long-term injury forced Michael Carrick into the transfer market to secure some much-needed backup for Lukas Engel.

Middlesbrough were linked with Ryan Giles for much of the summer but that move now looks very unlikely to happen.

This comes after Boro paid £1.3m for Neto Borges, who has been plying his trade in France with Clermont Foot 63.

The move was made official on August 27th ahead of Middlesbrough vs Stoke City, with the 27-year-old expected to be in attendance at the Riverside for the match.

Middlesbrough fans will love Neto Borges decision

After his signing was made official, some more details of Borges’ move to Middlesbrough have emerged.

The Brazilian has spent the previous two campaigns plying his trade in Ligue 1, more than holding his own against some quality European forwards.

This form seemingly garnered the interest of at least two top-flight European teams but Borges has instead chosen to join Middlesbrough – a decision the fans will no doubt love.

As per journalist Dominic Shaw, writing on X/Twitter, the left-back turned down Stade Brestois 29, who are set to play in the Champions League this season, as well as FC Nantes.

He wrote: “Boro confirm signing of Neto Borges. Three year contract for the Brazilian left-back.

“He turned down Brest – who are in the Champions League this season – and Nantes to join Boro.

“He’ll be at the Riverside for tonight’s game.”

What has Michael Carrick said about Neto Borges

Borges joins Luke Ayling, Aidan Morris, Delano Burgzorg, Harley Hunt, Micah Hamilton and Tommy Conway as new additions for Carrick this summer.

The Boro boss has now strengthened in every area of the pitch across the current window and is pleased with his new addition.

Carrick spoke directly to MFC.co.uk to offer a brief verdict on Middlesbrough’s latest signing.

He said: “We’re really pleased to bring Neto in. He’s got good experience, he’s a good character, and he’s a very good addition to our squad.”
