Middlesbrough fans who were hoping for the return of last year’s hot-shot, Cameron Archer this summer have been dealt a disappointing blow by Aston Villa boss, Unai Emery. With Villa competing on a number of fronts next season following their European qualification, the Villa supremo has reiterated his desire to keep a pool of forwards at the club in an interview captured by The Birmingham Mail.

He explained that owing to the fact that, should the club will perform well in cup competitions, they will play way over the usual quota of matches this season, and he will need to call upon the services of players like Cameron Archer and Jhon Duran.

Speaking initially about Duran, he said, “We are not speaking about the possibility of him going on loan.” He’s a player we will need because he is our second striker with Cameron Archer and we have to use both as well and we have to give them chances to help us, but it’s not a possibility for Jhon Duran to go on loan, it’s to stay here.”

It will be a blow to Middlesbrough as they will have hoped to revisit the possibility of another loan deal, but it won’t be a source of shock given the impact and profile of Cameron Archer’s exploits with both Boro and the England U-21 side this summer. Aston Villa could face a fixture pile-up similar to West Ham’s last season, but will be fancied to perform well in the Europa Conference League. The opening rounds will offer opportunities for the likes of Archer as first team regulars are likely not to be risked until the later stages of the competition.

It is not as clear cut regarding the possible loan of Aaron Ramsey, who is regarded by some as not quite in the same place as Archer in terms of development. He may well become available as he faces competition not only from other players, but from his own brother, Jacob Ramsey at the midlands club. That said, brother Jacob is currently recovering from injury, as is Bertrand Traore and Alex Moreno. So, a decision on Aaron Ramsey could be delayed until the full availability of the injured players is assessed.
