Middlesbrough took on Sheffield United in a Championship clash on Wednesday evening.

Boro headed into the game aiming to bounce back from a disappointing result last time out.

Two defensive mistakes saw Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough lose 2-0 to Bristol City over the weekend.

That defeat moved the Teessiders down to ninth in the Championship table and they then slipped down to 11th after the Tuesday evening games.

Getting back to winning ways at the Riverside Stadium in midweek was expected to prove a tough task, however, as Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United had lost just one league game prior to kick-off.

Sheffield United were predicted to beat Middlesbrough but fans will likely have been boosted after Carrick made a big change to his starting line-up.

Emmanuel Latte Lath was dropped to the bench after failing to score in opening play this season with Tommy Conway instead leading the line.

But it was the Ivorian who opened the scoring in the 80th minute just moments after coming on, heading home a lovely dinked ball from Finn Azaz.

Here’s how the players rated-

Seny Dieng – 5

Made some very questionable saves and was lucky not to concede in the first 45, having his blushes saved by a goalline clearance.

Luke Ayling – 5

A mixed display from the right-back who cleared the ball off the line to prevent a Sheffield United goal but also gave the ball away several times.

Rav van den Berg – 6

Largely solid 90 minutes, played out from the back well and won the majority of his duels.

George Edmundson – 6

Another solid showing from the centre-back who won the majority of his duels and was dominant in the air.

Neto Borges – 6

A much better defensive display from the left-back but he is still struggling to form a great connection with McGree

Aidan Morris – 6

Worked tirelessly across the 90 minutes, breaking up play, putting in some key tackles and starting attacking phases.

Hayden Hackney – 7

Much more of a goal threat than we saw from Hackney against Bristol with only a few big blocks for Blades defenders denying him a goal.

Ben Doak – 7

Another lively display from the winger who was a constant threat every time he received the ball out on the right.

Finn Azaz – 7

Made some key passes and tried to open the opposition up several times. His ball to Latte Lath for his goal was superb.

Riley McGree – 8

Offered more defensive support for Neto Bogres down the left and tested the Blades going forward a few times, especially when interchanging with Azaz and playing through the middle.

Tommy Conway – 7

Made some positive runs in behind but struggled to deal with the physical nature of Sheffield United’s centre-backs at times.

Helped Middlesbrough see out of the game for the final few minutes.
