Middlesbrough have had some phenomenal names grace the Riverside over the years, but only the best can cement themselves among the first-team squad members to obtain the Player of the Year Award.

The award was first introduced in 1966 but was not handed out on a consistent basis until the early 2000s’.

This is an award presented to the Middlesbrough fans’ player of the season, with voting taking place around April time on the club’s official website.

Who was the first-ever winner of the Middlesbrough Player of the Year Award?

The first winner of the award was Gordon Jones in 1965/66. Jones, who is second in the list of Middlesbrough’s all-time record appearance makers, won the prize twice during his time on Teesside.

Yes. Including Jones, seven players have won the award on more than one occasion: Gordon Jones, Dickie Rooks, Jim Platt, Tony Mowbray, Barry Robson, George Friend and Jonny Howson.

Who has won the Middlesbrough Player of the Year Award the most amount of times?

At present, no player has won the award on more than two occasions, with the seven players listed above all doing so. Jonny Howson could break that record in 2024/25, however.
