We take a look at Middlesbrough Football Club’s net spend during a summer of transition.
There have been few summers like it in terms of the turnaround in playing personnel.
Kieran Scott and the Middlesbrough hierarchy (hopefully with a healthy amount of input from head coach Michael Carrick) have overseen an almost complete overhaul of the squad that came so close to achieving their goal of escaping the Championship last season.
Some of that was beyond their control. Very little could have been done about the return of Cameron Archer, Zak Steffen, Aaron Ramsey, Ryan Giles and Alex Mowatt to their parent clubs. However, to see three of the most influential of those loans – Giles, Archer and Ramsey – each join the teams who were promoted ahead of Boro in Luton, Sheffield United and Burnley, was galling to say the least.
It showed just how much of a missed opportunity it was for the Teesside club. On top of those outgoings, was possibly the biggest sting in the tail of them all, with last year’s top goal-scorer from the Championship, Chuba Akpom, leaving for Dutch giants Ajax in a deal reportedly worth £10.5m, potentially rising to £12.2m. The other outgoings have proved to be less fruitful in as far as tangible/monetary rewards go.
That said, fans have been treated to no fewer than ten permanent signings, with that Akpom money no doubt cushioning the blow of any transfer fees incurred. The club has also taken two very competent Championship players on loan deals.
It is early days, but to say that Middlesbrough have not exactly set the world alight with performances just yet, is an understatement. The jury is still out as to whether Boro fans are happy with the business conducted by their club and you would imagine that only time provide the clearest answer in terms of how successful the new recruitment model will prove to be.

The transfer activity at the club as seen a seismic shift in the way they do their business. They wanted to become less reliant on temporary loan transfers who could leave them with too many voids to fill.
Aside form the Goalkeeping position, all of the permanent transfers that Middlesbrough have brought in have been 24 and under. That brings with it its own jeapordy. Those players may well come into their own as they develop, but do Boro have the squad to allow that time to elapse whilst also remaining competitive? That is the question that most fans will want answering.
