Former Middlesbrough loanee Ryan Giles has revealed just how close he was to rejoining the club in the summer.

Giles was a huge hit during a loan spell at the Riverside Stadium during the 2022/23 campaign and after spending last season on loan at Championship rivals Hull City, made his move permanent in the summer.

That didn’t stop Boro from trying to bring him back to Teesside in the summer, however, neither side could agree on a deal that suited all parties.

Ryan Giles opens up on failed Middlesbrough move

For the first time since transfer talks, Giles has opened up on the failed move and the conversations he held with Hull.

He told Hull Live: “There were conversations, of course there were. I’m not going to shy away from it and lie about it, but I obviously only joined the club as a permanent in the summer, I know I was here in January but that was obviously as a loan.

“I had the conversations, it wasn’t the case of me saying ‘I want to leave’, it wasn’t that. We had a conversation and that was that. The club made it clear they wanted me to stay and I respected that.”

Hull City vice-chairman speaks out on Giles’ talks with Middlesbrough

Having been brought in permanently for £4m in the summer, Hull weren’t prepared to cut their losses on Giles so quickly.

As revealed by the full-back, Hull vice-chairman Tan Kesler told the 24-year-old wouldn’t be leaving under any circumstances.

Speaking after the Tigers’ heavy 4-0 defeat to Norwich City on Saturday, he said: “Tan’s come out and said they’ve invested a lot of money into me, which they have, and I won’t shy away from that.

“I know there’s a big responsibility on me as a player to step up and that’s ultimately what I aim to do here. I want to show the fans, I want to show the club, I want to show everybody that they’ve made the right decision and it’s as simple as that.”
