A look back on seven incredible Middlesbrough records that are unlikely to be broken any time soon.

Middlesbrough Football Club was created in 1876. Since then, 148 years of history have been made on Teesside.

European runs, a League Cup triumph in 2004 – the North East outfit have had some special moments over the years, especially under current owner, Steve Gibson.

Heading into 2024/25, Boro are preparing to battle it out in the Championship, with Premier League promotion eyed.

Manager Michael Carrick will be looking to create some history of his own at the Riverside, but some achievements may never be matched again.

In this article, Boro News has examined many of the club’s records and has picked out seven which may last the test of time.

Middlesbrough’s highest appearance maker ever – Tim Williamson

Tim Williamson is Middlesbrough’s all-time record appearance maker, having played 602 times for the Reds.

Williamson began his career with Boro in 1902 and spent his entire career on Teeside before retiring in 1923.

The North Ormsbey-born star was a goalkeeper who also earned seven caps for England.

No current Boro star comes close to matching Williamson’s appearance record, with 36-year-old Jonny Howson’s 318 the closet.

Middlesbrough’s oldest first-team player – Dimitrios Konstantopoulos

Dimitrios Konstantopoulos, better known as ‘Dimi’ to the Boro faithful, became Middlesbrough’s oldest player on February 5th, 2019.

The goalkeeper’s final appearance for the club came in the FA Cup versus Newport County when he was 40 years and 68 days old.

The now-retired shot-stopper will always be a fan favourite on Teesside following his excellent displays during the club’s promotion-winning season of 2015/16.

Again, Howson is Middlesbrough’s current oldest player, turning 36 on May 21st of this year.

All-time top scorer, most goals in a season, most league goals in a season – George Camsell

George Camsell will forever be immortalised as Middlesbrough’s greatest goalscorer.

Camsell is the club’s all-time record goalscorer with 345 goals and also holds the records for most goals in a single season and most league goals in one campaign.

In 1926/27, the Englishman scored a staggering 63 goals in all competitions, while also netting 59 in the Second Divison for Boro.

Both of these records will never be beaten by a Middlesbrough player. The closest anyone has come in the modern era was Fabrizio Ravanelli, who scored 31 in 1996/97.

Record league win – Middlesbrough 9-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

Middlesbrough’s record league win came all the way back on August 23rd, 1958.

Boro faced Brighton in a Second Divions clash and came away with a 9-0 win. Club legend Brian Clough scored five goals in that match.

The closest the Reds have come to matching that record in the modern era was their historic 8-1 victory over Manchester City on May 11th, 2008.

Most consecutive appearances – David Armstrong

David Armstrong began his playing career with Middlesbrough in 1971.

During his time at the club, Armstrong made 359 appearances and scored 59 goals for the Reds.

In that period, the attacking midfielder was able to make a startling 305 consecutive appearances.

Given the hectic schedule modern players face, it is safe to say that record will never be broken.
