Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has received some unwanted attention from opposition fans recently.

Steve Gibson named Michael Carrick as manager of Middlesbrough in October of 2022, replacing Chris Wilder in the dugout.

Prior to moving to the Riverside Stadium, Carrick’s only experience in management came at Manchester United.

The ex-midfielder was caretaker manager for a few games during the 2021/22 season at Old Trafford.

The 43-year-old initially joined Manchester United as a player in 2006, signing from Tottenham Hotspur.

He spent 16 years in Manchester, starring alongside some of the all-time Premier League greats including Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and more.

The Middlesbrough manager has since linked back up with some of his former teammates in the North West of England and endured some bizarre interactions with fans while he was there.

Why opposition fans have been stopping Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick

During the September international break, Carrick travelled to Manchester to take part in a Legends fixture, which saw United face off against a Celtic side led by Champions League winner Paul Lambert.

The game finished level at 1-1 in normal time before the Hoops secured a 5-4 win on penalties.

Now, the Middlesbrough manager has revealed why he kept getting stopped in the street while he was in Manchester recently.

As per the Northern Echo, Millwall fans stopped Carrick to thank him for allowing Josh Coburn to join their club on loan.

He said: “I’m delighted to see Josh do well.

“Randomly, I’ve had a few Millwall fans stopping and thanking me while I was back in Manchester. They just randomly bumped into me and said ‘thanks for letting us have Josh!’

“He’s done great and that’s exactly the reason that he’s gone there – to play games and score goals.”

How Josh Cobrun fared on Millwall debut

Coburn was Middlesbrough’s backup number nine in the 2023/24 season behind Emmanuel Latte Lath.

The forward only scored five Championship goals last term but did miss part of the campaign through injury.

Coburn started the current season in ok form for Boro, scoring one and assisting one in the 3-0 win over Leeds United in the Carabao Cup.

However, with Tommy Conway signing for £4.5m last month, there was little room in the squad for the 21-year-old and he eventually joined Millwall on deadline day.

Neil Harris wasted little time utilising Coburn, who started, scored and assisted when the East London outfit beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 on August 31st.
