Middlesbrough should look to sign one former Manchester United player as an alternative to Ryan Giles this summer.
Middlesbrough got their 2024 summer transfer window off to a flying start.
Working alongside owner Steve Gibson and Head of Football Kieran Scott, Michael Carrick brought in three new first-team players early in the window.
Boro’s activity in the market has slowed in the last week or so but one player has continued to be linked.
Earlier this month, it was claimed that Middlesbrough were preparing to make a bid for Ryan Giles.
Hull City owner Acun Ilicali then revealed the club’s stance on Giles moving to Middlesbrough, stating they would let the Englishman join Boro if he wanted to.
This suggested that Giles was set to return to the Riverside Stadium following a successful loan spell in 2022/23.
However, this week saw Hull vice-chairman Tan Kesler deliver a fresh transfer update on Giles and it was not good news for Boro.
The Hull chief claimed he does not expect Giles to leave the MKM Stadium this summer, dealing Middlesbrough a big blow.

Former Manchester United gem Brandon Williams can be Ryan Giles alternative
While a move for Giles could still happen this summer, it looks unlikely at this stage.
As a result, Middlesbrough should start looking at alternative options for the Hull man.
One player Carrick and his staff should consider signing is former Manchester United player, Brandon Williams.
Williams has featured 51 times for the Red Devils’ senior team and spent 2023/24 on loan with Ipswich Town.
The 23-year-old returned to Old Trafford over the summer but is now a free agent after being released by United.

What Brandon Williams can bring to Middlesbrough
Williams missed the second half of 2023/24 due to injury but was a key member of Ipswich’s promotion-winning side before that.
He played 15 league matches for the Tractor Boys and scored two goals.
Williams has a similar profile to Giles. He is eager to push high up the pitch and his best qualities are in the attacking side of his game.
The full-back would also offer Carrick versatility across his Middlesbrough defence.
Left-back is Williams’ natural position but he is very competent on the right as well, playing there 12 times in 2023/24.
And given both of Boro’s current right-backs are 32 or older, Williams could be a long-term option in that position.
