Michael Carrick ‘considering’ Middlesbrough additions in key position this month

Middlesbrough could strengthen in a new area before the close of the 2024 summer transfer window.

Boro have had a fairly quiet summer transfer window compared to previous seasons.

Kieran Scott signed 14 players for Middlesbrough in 2023/24, with that number much lower this time around.

So far, three first-team players have completed transfers to Middlesbrough in 2024, as well as one academy starlet.

Luke Ayling explained why he snubbed Sheffield United for Boro after returning to the Riverside on a free transfer in June.

Delano Burgzorg scored his first Middlesbrough goal in pre-season last month after joining from Mainz 05.

Aidan Morris is the Teessiders’ latest senior summer addition, arriving from MLS outfit Columbus Crew.

Harley Hunt has also joined the club but the 16-year-old will be part of their U21 team in the coming season despite a brief pre-season cameo against Harrogate Town.

Middlesbrough consider targeting new area in transfer window

So far, Boro have signed a right-back, left-winger, and central midfielder in the current window.

A striker also looks to be on the agenda as Tommy Conway has been linked to Middlesbrough after he turned down a new contract with Bristol City recently.

Now, however, it looks as though a new area is being targeted by Michael Carrick and co.

Speaking on the You Are My Boro podcast, journalist Dominic Shaw confirmed Middlesbrough are considering signing a right-winger in August.

He said: “From what we gather it is. That is something that Boro are considering.

“Now I don’t know where it’s at, how far down the line Boro are. But it comes as no surprise that Boro are at least looking at strengthening on the right side.

“But when you look around the squad, Boro have more than one option in every department other than on the right side. With that in mind, it’s no surprise they are at least assessing their options.”

Why Middlesbrough must sign a right-winger this summer

Marcus Forss spent the 2023/24 season as Boro’s primary right-wing option.

The Finn provided a solid goal threat, scoring seven and assisting two in his 21 Championship appearances.

However, the player missed the second half of the previous campaign due to injury and Forss is expected to be out versus Swansea City on August 10th as he continues to recover from the same issue.

This leaves Isaiah Jones at Boro’s only fit senior right-wing option going into the new season.

Jones is a decent player but can be rather inconsistent, meaning a new right-sided winger would no doubt help Middlesbrough in their promotion push.

Academy star Sonny Finch has been filling in for Forss on the right during Boro’s pre-season schedule.

But he is a natural centre-forward and his limited experience means he may not be ready to play regularly at senior level just yet.

No specific right-wingers have been linked with Boro yet, but it is an area the club should look to improve in before deadline day.
