Middlesbrough could now sanction late loan exits for these two first-team players.
Middlesbrough look to be in store for a busy deadline day.
The club’s transfer plans seem to focus around Morgan Rogers and his seemingly imminent move to Aston Villa; Michael Carrick may now be keen for the move to go through so that he can get on with his own business.
One name linked ahead of today is Oxford United’s Tyler Goodrham, who’s said to be viewed as a direct replacement for Rogers.
But Boro could also see some players leaving Riverside today, with Matthew Hoppe and Alex Gilbert two who could leave on loan.
Matthew Hoppe and Alex Gilbert available for loan
Scott Wilson has wrote on The Northern Echo‘s Middlesbrough transfer blog that first-team duo Hoppe and Gilbert are both available for a loan move before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm.
Hoppe returned to Middlesbrough last month after a loan spell in the MLS with San Jose Earthquakes, but he’s yet to be registered and so he’s yet to feature this season; he’s made just six Championship appearances for the club since arriving in 2022.
The 22-year-old Gilbert meanwhile has featured four times in the Championship this season. He’s yet to score and he’s yet to really make a mark on the first-team, and it seems like the Irishman is in desperate need of some regular game time.

Loan exits for Hoppe and Gilbert make sense
Middlesbrough look poised to make an attacking signing today, given the exit of Rogers, and that might leave both Hoppe and Gilbert in the same predicament they’re in now.
Neither player is really playing a role for Boro this season and both might be better served out on loan.
For Hoppe, it’s not been an easy ride since he joined Middlesbrough, with a third loan exit now on the cards; Boro though will be keen for Hoppe to keep progressing after spending a reported £2.5million on him before.
Gilbert meanwhile has barely played any first-team football for a 22-year-old. He’s shown glimpses of a decent player but he really needs to start kicking on now, and a loan move might be his only chance of doing so before next season.
