Middlesbrough are looking to sign a Premier League defender before the close of the transfer window.
Michael Carrick needs at least one more name through the door at the Riverside Stadium this week.
Boro’s 2023/24 campaign was plagued by injury issues and that problem has continued into the current season.
10 players missed out as Middlesbrough drew 2-2 with Portsmouth last weekend, while George McCormick picked up a knock in their League Cup defeat to Stoke City on Tuesday.
McCormick is the fourth centre-back to pick up some form of issue on Teesside so far this summer.
Dael Fry and Darragh Lenihan are yet to play a single game for Middlesbrough in the current season as they are still yet to fully recover from injuries that kept them out at the back end of last term.
Rav van den Berg has also missed Boro’s last two fixtures after nursing a problem through the Derby County defeat.
This has left Matt Clarke as Carrick’s only available senior centre-back, with academy starlet Harley Hunt and Luke Ayling called upon to fill the void recently.
However, as Boro News reported on Wednesday, Middlesbrough are in talks to sign a centre-back this week.

Middlesbrough in talks to sign George Edmundson
Now, one name the club are looking to sign has been revealed in the form of Ipswich Town centre-back, George Edmundson.
According to journalist Pete O’Rouke, Middlesbrough are one of several Championship clubs in the race for Edmundson.
The centre-back did play in Ipswich’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City on the opening weekend but only came off the bench for one minute.
No potential transfer fee is mentioned in the update from O’Rourke.

What will George Edmundson bring to Middlesbrough
Edmundson joined Ipswich from Scottish powerhouse Rangers in the summer of 2021.
During his time with the Gers, the stopper was dubbed ‘faultless’ by then-manager, Steven Gerrard, as per the Glasgow Times.
He has since made 75 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring five and assisting four in said ties.
The 27-year-old only made 15 appearances for the Tractor Boys during their promotion-winning 2023/24 campaign but was still a useful squad option.
Given Boro only need to sign a centre-back while their injury crisis is ongoing, Edmundson could be the perfect player for Carrick and co.
He will likely be cheap given his lack of importance to Ipswich and as he is 27, he will still have some sell-on value when and if Boro want to move him on in the future.
