Middlesbrough have had an active summer transfer window but they may not be done just yet.

Boro kicked off the transfer window by signing Luke Ayling on a free transfer from Leeds United.

Ayling was Middlesbrough’s best player vs Portsmouth, despite some defensive errors costing the Teessiders the three points.

The right-back was followed through the door by Delano Burgzorg and Aidan Morris.

Morris is a fan favourite at Middlesbrough already, while Burgzorg offers more of an attacking threat down the left flank than Riley McGree.

Harley Hunt then joined the club’s academy from Swindon Town before Middlesbrough signed Micah Hamilton from Manchester City.

Hamilton made his first start for the North East outfit on Tuesday when Boro were beaten 5-0 by Stoke City.

Middlesbrough’s most expensive signing so far this summer was Tommy Conway, who moved from Bristol City for £4.5m.

The latest addition at the Riverside, meanwhile, saw Neto Borges join Boro for £1.3m.

Middlesbrough transfer window verdict

So far, Michael Carrick should be largely pleased with how Middlesbrough have performed in the transfer market.

Key positions have been strengthened and unlike 2023, Boro are yet to lose any of their top names this month.

Now, after the arrival of Borges on Tuesday, talkSPORT pundit Phil Spencer has offered his verdict on Middlesbrough’s summer transfer window so far on X/Twitter.

He wrote: “There’s every chance of this backfiring, but Middlesbrough have absolutely smashed this transfer window so far.

“Quality additions, good characters and pretty modest fees. With all of our top players still at the club and depth all over the park, we’re looking good.”

Middlesbrough expected to sign more players before Deadline Day

The transfer window will slam shut at 11pm BST on Friday, August 30th, for Championship clubs.

While Boro have done well in the market so far, further reinforcement could still be made.

Middlesbrough are monitoring their centre-back situation ahead of a potential late move this week.

Matt Clarke is currently Carrick’s only fit senior centre-half and with defence the club’s primary issues in the last three games, a new signing in that position does make sense.

No specific names are being linked right now, but that may change ahead of Friday.
