A former Middlesbrough player has shared his opinion on the club’s current manager, Michael Carrick.

Middlesbrough have enjoyed relative success in the transfer market in recent seasons.

The current summer transfer window has seen the club sign four players already. Luke Ayling, Harley Hunt, Aidan Morris, and Delano Burgzorg have all joined the Reds this summer.

Hull City’s owner also confirmed that the Tigers will let left-back Ryan Giles move to Middlesbrough.

Despite finishing eighth in the Championship last season, Boro had a largely successful 2023 summer transfer window as well.

Rav van den Berg made the move from PEC Zwolle and though he was only 19 when he signed, the Dutchman was named Middlesbrough Player of the Year for 2023/24.

Emmanuel Latte Lath also enjoyed a fruitful debut campaign on Teesside, scoring 16 goals in 30 league matches.

One signing that did not really work out for Middlesbrough last year, however, was Sam Greenwood.

Sam Greenwood learned a lot from Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough

Greenwood joined Middlesbrough on loan from Leeds United for the 2023/24 season.

Boro had the option to make the move a permanent one at the end of the previous campaign but decided against doing so.

The 22-year-old scored five and assisted three in 38 league games for the North East side but struggled for consistent form.

Greenwood has once again gone out on loan ahead of 2024/25, joining Preston North End.

After completing his move to Preston, the player spoke about Carrick and how the Boro boss taught him a lot, as per Teesside Live.

He said: “The loan at Middlesbrough last season was amazing and I learned a lot, especially under the manager there. Michael Carrick taught me a lot about the game and hopefully Preston will get the best out of me this season.”

Middlesbrough need to replace Greenwood

Middlesbrough opting not to make Greenwood’s move a permanent one this summer has left them short of options on the left-wing.

Sammy Silvera was backup to the Englishman last term but he has now joined Portsmouth on loan.

This means new signing Burgzorg is the only quality option Carrick has to start on the left at present.

Riley McGree and Alex Gilbert can both play there but if Boro want to increase their promotion chances, they should aim to strengthen out wide this summer.

No wingers are currently being linked with Middlesbrough, but there are still over six weeks of the transfer window to go.
