Two former Middlesbrough players were in fine form for their current club on Saturday afternoon.

There were plenty of incomings and outgoings at the Riverside during the 2024 summer transfer window.

Nine new faces came through the door, with one of the latest additions, Neto Borges, making his debut on Saturday when Middlesbrough beat Cardiff City 2-0.

Ben Doak and George Edmondson also made Deadline Day moves to Boro but were not signed in time to feature over the weekend.

Elsewhere, there were plenty of exits from the North East both on Friday and across the transfer window.

Paddy McNair, Jamies Jones and Liam Roberts have departed Teesside on free transfers.

Hayden Coulson was sold to Blackpool on a permanent basis and there were several loan exits.

Sammy Silvera and Zach Hemming left for Portsmouth and Leyton Orient earlier in the summer.

Then, on deadline day, Sonny Finch joined League Two side MK Dons and Josh Coburn moved to Millwall.

Josh Coburn makes Millwall debut after leaving Middlesbrough

Despite only signing on Friday afternoon, Coburn was thrown straight into the Millwall eleven on Saturday.

The East London outfit took on Sheffield Wednesday in a 3pm BST kick-off on August 31st at The Den.

And Coburn had about as good a debut as his new club could have hoped for.

Millwall took the lead inside 58 minutes with Coburn the scorer, taking advantage of some poor Wednesday defending.

The 21-year-old was involved 13 minutes later when ex-Boro man Duncan Watmore scored Millwall’s second of the day, with Coburn providing the assist.

He was subbed off after 77 minutes, capping off a superb debut for his new club.

Should Middlesbrough have let Josh Coburn leave

Coburn’s excellent debut for Millwall will no doubt spark much debate among the Boro fanbase.

The Englishman is a good striker and showed patches of his quality in the 2023/24 season.

However, it is fair to say that even after scoring and assisting versus Wednesday, he is still a level below Emmanuel Latte Lath and Tommy Conway.

And as Middlesbrough only agreed to loan Coburn, rather than selling him, even if he does end up becoming a top-level player at Millwall, he will return to the Riverside for 2025/26.
