Middlesbrough have confirmed Micah Hamilton as their fifth signing of the 2024 summer transfer window.

After an eighth-place finish in the Championship last season, Michael Carrick and Kieran Scott have been working hard behind the scenes to improve Boro’s first-team squad for the coming campaign.

Middlesbrough began the summer in hectic fashion by signing three new senior players.

Luke Ayling joined from Leeds United on a free transfer after impressing on loan at the Riverside in 2023/24.

Delano Burgzorg then made the switch to the North East from German outfit Mainz 05.

Burgzorg’s arrival was followed by Aidan Morris joining from Columbus Crew for £3.18m.

Boro’s transfer activity slowed down somewhat after Morris’ capture, with Harley Hunt, who is now part of the club’s academy, the most recent signing before this week.

Middlesbrough are close to a move for Tommy Conway, but that deal is taking some time as Bristol City want more of the £5m the Teessiders offered up front.

However, one new signing is now complete as the North East outfit welcomed Micah Hamilton to the club on August 8th.

Manchester City expert gives verdict on Middlesbrough signing Micah Hamilton

Middlesbrough will pay Manchester City £3.5m for Hamilton, with part of that fee made up of add-ons.

The 20-year-old is still likely relatively unknown to most Middlesbrough fans given he has only made three senior appearances in his career so far.

But Boro News have now spoken to Manchester City expert James Thompson to get the lowdown on the club’s latest summer signing.

Hamilton is a versatile midfielder who can play on both flanks, as a number 10 or as a central midfielder but, Thompson believes the Englishman will be best utilised on the wing.

He said: “He’s played in pretty much everywhere across the midfield and attack but he’s mostly played either as a left-winger or as an attacking midfielder. My guess is he will likely stick to the wing.”

Thompson also provided an insight into the now-Middlesbrough star’s biggest strengths.

He told Boro News: “Hamilton’s strengths include his technical ability on the ball, his speed and the way he can get past players in one-on-one situations.

“He’s a very dangerous player who could cause problems for defenders.”

Micah Hamilton compared to senior Manchester City star

Hamilton looks to possess all the qualities needed to become a top player for Middlesbrough but his lack of experience is a concern.

The Manchester-born player has made just three senior appearances for the Sky Blues, though one of those was in the Champions League and saw him provide a goal and an assist versus Red Star Belgrade.

When asked by Boro News if Hamilton is ready to play regular senior football, Thompson suggested the player’s ability to perform consistently at the top level is still up in the air.

He said: “That’s difficult to say because he’s only made one senior appearance for City. Although he did manage to win a penalty during his cameo against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League last season.

“If he were to get regular minutes for Middlesbrough, this would be the ideal way for him to show how ready he is to play senior football.”

Despite his quality, it is easy to see why Manchester City have allowed Hamilton to leave on a permanent transfer.

Pep Guardiola already has so many top players to choose from in the attacking third, including Jeremey Doku, whom Thompson compared the Boro star to.

He said: “Hamilton is very similar to Jeremy Doku based on the strengths he has in terms of being hard to stop and get the ball off.”
