Middlesbrough will hope to have the deal wrapped up ahead of the Championship season getting underway.

Boro kicked off the 2024 summer transfer window in hectic fashion, getting three new first-team players through the door.

Delano Burgzorg, Aidan Morris, and Luke Ayling all completed permanent transfers to the Riverside Stadium before pre-season.

The Teesiders have not signed any new senior players over the last month but more additions now looking very likely.

Middlesbrough are to set sign Micah Hamilton from Manchester City for a fee of £3.5m, with add-ons making up part of that sum.

Elsewhere, a new striker has been a priority for Michael Carrick this summer, and a deal now appears to be close.

Middlesbrough are trying to sign Tommy Conway from Bristol City but have faced competition from Championship rivals Burnley and Hull City for his signature.

Boro made a bid of £5m for the player last week, which was thought to be heavily incentivised.

When Middlesbrough could complete Tommy Conway move

Despite interest from other clubs, Boro News understands Middlesbrough have the edge in the Conway transfer race.

This is because the club’s hierarchy is close to the striker’s agents, and that good relationship could help them when it comes to getting a deal over the line.

Now, it appears a deal for the 21-year-old City striker is moving towards completion.

Journalist Ian Murtagh provided an update on Boro’s pursuit of Conway in the August 8th print edition of the Mirror.

He explained that Middlesbrough are close to sealing a £5m move for the centre-forward, but a deal is unlikely to be done before Boro’s Championship opener on August 10th against Swansea City.

The delay in the transfer is understood to have been caused by the Robins wanting more money up front.

Can Conway replace Emmanuel Latte Lath at Middlesbrough

Conway has been Bristol City’s main striker for the last few years, finishing as their top scorer in the previous two seasons.

The Scottish international scored 10 and assisted one in 39 league matches in 2023/24, a decent record but nothing to write home about.

When Boro were first linked with Conway, it looked as though he would be brought in as a backup striker ahead of Josh Coburn.

However, Middlesbrough may need to replace Emmanuel Latte Lath this month after links to Wolverhampton Wanderers, RB Salzburg and AS Monaco emerged.

The Ivorian was Boro’s top scorer in 2023/24, netting 16 goals in 30 league outings.

His form at the back end of the campaign was particularly impressive and after netting 11 in his last 12, Latte Lath has been backed to be ‘unstoppable’ for Middlesbrough in the coming campaign.

But should he indeed be sold, a lot of pressure will be put on Conway to step up and provide the majority of Boro’s goals.
