Michael Carrick sent a clear message to one Middlesbrough player with recent call

The future of the Middlesbrough goalkeeper department is looking bright thanks to Michael Carrick.

Middlesbrough began the 2024 summer transfer window with an overstocked goalkeeper department.

Seny Dieng spent the 2023/24 season as the Teessiders’ primary number one and that has continued into the current campaign.

Behind Dieng, Tom Glover acted as the number two with Jamie Jones acting as the third-choice option.

However, after Zach Hemming and Sol Brynn returned from loan spells with St Miren and Leyton Orient, Michael Carrick had some big decisions to make in that position.

Jones left Middlesbrough for Salford City on a free transfer while Hemming has joined Leyton Orient on loan.

Despite it seeming likely Hemming would become the backup goalkeeper this season, Carrick made his stance on keeping Brynn at Boro clear.

With Dieng starting in the league and Brynn between the sticks for the Reds’ two Carabao Cup games this term, Glover’s long-term Middlesbrough future is in doubt.

Michael Carrick message to Sol Brynn is now clear

With Hemming still out on loan and Dieng keeping his place as the starting keeper, Brynn may have been wondering if he had a long-term future at the Riverside Stadium.

However, Carrick has now sent a clear message to the player after he was offered and signed a new Boro contract that keeps him at the club until 2028.

Dieng’s deal expires in 2027, with it now clear the Middlesbrough manager sees Brynn as his long-term number one.

Barring the two outings in the League Cup, the 23-year-old has not been given too many chances this season but that should change once the Teessiders’ FA Cup campaign gets underway in January.

What Sol Brynn Middlesbrough contract means for Zach Hemming and Tom Glover

With Carrick’s stance on Brynn’s Middlesbrough future now reaffirmed, Hemming and Glover may be questioning their roles at the club going forward.

Glover is out of contract in 2026 and after being relegated to third-choice option in 2024/25, it is hard to see the Australian staying at Boro beyond this season.

As for Hemming, he is also out of contract in 2026 but given his age and potential, he could be kept on Teesside beyond then.

However, after Carrick chose to loan him out and offer Brynn a new deal, it looks likely that if Hemming chooses to stay in the North East, he will be used as the second-choice goalkeeper if and when Dieng departs as Brynn now looks set to be the future number one.
