Millwall boss Neil Harris has shared details of the conversations he held with Middlesbrough to sign Josh Coburn on loan.

Boro decided to loan Josh Coburn to fellow Championship side Millwall on deadline day in a bid to provide him with regular first-team football.

Coburn got off to an excellent start on his debut for the south London outfit, scoring in a 3-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday, just a day after joining the club.

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick admitted that it was vital that Coburn was given game time and Neil Harris has since revealed what it was that convinced Carrick to let the 21-year-old make the move to the New Den.

Despite several Championship clubs showing interest, it was Harris who won the race for Coburn after laying out his plans for the forward and how he would fit the squad.

Following conversations between Harris and Carrick, the former was able to convince the Boro boss that his style of play would help improve the 21-year-old’s all-round game.

Speaking to Southwark News, he said: “You want your players to develop in different ways and Boro were really keen to send him to us because having spoken to them, explained how we’re going to play, what I want Josh to do, they were really excited about sending him to us.

“And Josh was really excited about coming because his attributes fit my style perfectly and I think fit our football club.

“There’s not many players at this football club that get the Monk chant like that when they come off. That was awesome to hear and should make him very proud.”

Can Josh Coburn play against Middlesbrough?

Due to EFL rules, Coburn won’t be eligible to play against Middlesbrough as the Teesiders remain his parent club.

This means that he will miss the game at the Riverside Stadium on 14 December and the return fixture at the New Den on 12 April 2025.

He and Millwall are next in action on Saturday in a home clash against Luton Town whilst Boro host Preston North End.
