Michael Carrick has been quizzed on a new Middlesbrough signing after their meeting with Portsmouth.

Boro were back in Championship action on Saturday afternoon, taking on Portsmouth at the Riverside Stadium.

The Teessiders were looking to bounce back after Michael Carrick watched Middlesbrough lose 1-0 to Derby County at Pride Park last week.

Middlesbrough dominated against the Rams but were unable to find an equaliser despite having 20 shots on goal.

With Portsmouth, like Derby, having just been promoted to the Championship for 2024/25, they too were expected to sit deep and not let Middlesbrough counter, though that did not really prove to be the case.

When all was said and done, Middlesbrough were held to a 2-2 draw.

While there is much to talk about surrounding the game, Boro fans were no doubt eager to hear what Carrick had to say regarding the latest transfer talk in the North East.

Middlesbrough want to sign a left-back in the final week of the transfer window and appear to be closing in on a transfer.

Neto Borges was linked to Boro on Saturday, with journalist Marc Mechenoua claiming a deal was to be completed ‘in the next few hours’.

When quizzed on more incomings at the Riverside post-Portsmouth, meanwhile, Carrick did not shut down a potential move, as per the Northern Echo.

He said: “Until anyone is our player, I don’t think it’s right to speak about anything like that.

“If there is anything, we’ll let you know.”

Who is Neto Borges?

Borges joined Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot on a free transfer from Belgian outfit KRC Genk in 2022.

He enjoyed a solid debut campaign in France, scoring three and providing three assists in 33 Ligue 1 matches.

Injury issues limited Borges to just 28 league matches in the previous campaign but despite his club being relegated, the wing-back was still able to assist three in said fixtures.

The Brazilian is a left-back by trade but has been deployed as a left-wing-back in a back-three/five since his move to Clermont.

He is also capable of filling in at centre-back when required, something he did on four occasions in 2023/24.
