Middlesbrough have opened talks to sign a Championship player who was once dubbed the ‘next Jamie Vardy’.

Middlesbrough kicked off the 2024 summer transfer window in hectic fashion, signing three first-team players.

The incomings at the Riverside Stadium slowed down following the arrival of Aidan Morris but business looks set to pick back up soon.

Boro News reported on July 18th that Middlesbrough were looking at the foreign market to strengthen on the left wing this summer.

It has since emerged that Middlesbrough are set to rival Sunderland for a European winger.

This was followed by a report that Middlesbrough have offered €1.75m for 18-year-old midfielder, Yusuf Sertkaya.

Now, it appears another position is being targeted by Michael Carrick and co. this week.

Middlesbrough open talks for Bristol City striker Tommy Conway

A new striker remains a priority for Middlesbrough in the current transfer window and they appear to be working toward a potential signing.

According to Sky Sports News journalist Ron Walker, writing on X/Twitter, Boro have opened talks with Bristol City over a move for Tommy Conway.

Conway played 39 league games last season and scored 10 goals but has been training with Bristol’s U21s since turning down a new contract earlier this summer.

The 21-year-old is now in the final 12 months of his deal and will need to be sold this summer or in January if the Robins want to make any money on him.

Is Tommy Conway an upgrade on Josh Coburn

Emmanuel Latte Lath will be the Teessiders’ primary number nine going in 2024/25 after hitting 11 goals in his last 12 league games.

Josh Coburn was expected to be the backup option for the Ivoarian but that may change if Conway is signed.

As already mentioned, Conway scored 10 goals in 39 league matches last term, which is five more than Coburn managed.

However, Coburn only made 21 Championship appearances and played dramatically fewer minutes – 993 compared to 2,295 for the Bristol City man.

While Conway could prove a useful signing and potentially be available for cheap given his contract situation, the stats suggest he is not much of an upgrade on Middlesbrough’s current options up front.

However, the Scotland international still has plenty of potential and, as per The Times, was dubbed the ‘next Jamie Vardy’ back in 2022.
