The Middlesbrough player was tipped for a bright future at the Riverside but could leave before deadline day.

Boro have had an active summer transfer window so, bringing in five new players for Michael Carrick.

Middlesbrough are one of the biggest spenders in the Championship during the current window, with only three teams currently having paid out more for new additions.

Luke Ayling, Delano Burgzorg, Aidan Morris, Micah Hamilton, and Harley Hunt have all made moves to the Riverside in the last few months.

However, the Teessiders have also been eager to move on several players who had no place in the first-team squad for the 2024/25 Championship season.

Paddy McNair has moved to the MLS after his contract expired at the end of 2023/24, with Liam Roberts leaving on a free at the same time.

Boro then sanctioned loan moves for goalkeeper Zach Hemming, who joined Leyton Orient, and winger Sammy Silvera, who has linked up with Portsmouth.

Middlesbrough open to letting player leave this month

Further exits could still happen in the North East during the final few weeks of the summer transfer window.

Millwall want to sign Josh Coburn, whose future is in doubt now Middlesbrough are set to sign Tommy Conway from Bristol City.

And now, a fresh report from Teesside Live has revealed another player could be heading for the exit door in the near future.

The man in question is Alex Gilbert, who joined Middlesbrough from Brentford in 2023.

It is believed Boro are weighing up their options regarding Gilbert, with a loan move for the 2024/25 season being discussed.

Should Middlesbrough loan Alex Gilbert this summer

Gilbert has now been at Middlesbrough for just over one year, signing from the Bees on July 4, 2023.

Following his arrival, the 22-year-old struggled to earn regular minutes under Carrick.

He featured 12 times in the Championship during the previous season, earning just 225 minutes of playing time.

Despite this, Carrick has backed Gilbert to have a bright future at the club when quizzed on the midfielder recently, as per Teesside Live.

He said: “We hope that he’s got a bright future here, that’s for sure.

“He has developed a lot in the time he’s been here – just over a year now. I think you can see that.

“He had a big couple of games at the end of last season and a couple of big individual moments for him to feel that belonging within the group and knowing that he can play at the level.”

While the Middlesbrough boss remains a fan of Gilbert, it is clear he is not ready to feature regularly at this level just yet.

The Englishman played well during the League Cup victory over Leeds United in midweek but Finn Azaz is ahead of him in the pecking order, while the arrival of Hamilton from Manchester City may also limit his minutes.
