Middlesbrough have spent their share of money this summer.

After years of mismanagement, Boro are finally starting to make some positive moves in the transfer market.

The Teessiders’ transfer business over the last few years means Middlesbrough could spend £30m on players next year.

In the current window, meanwhile, Michael Carrick has been working closely with Head of Football Kieran Scott to make some smart additions to the club’s first-team squad.

Luke Ayling was the first name through the door at the Riverside, re-joining on a free transfer from Leeds United.

The right-back was swiftly joined by Delano Burgzorg and Aidan Morris, arriving in the North East from Mainz 05 and Columbus Crew.

Boro’s signings slowed down somewhat after Morris but Middlesbrough beat two Premier League sides to Harley Hunt, who has joined the club’s academy from Swindown Town.

The latest addition for Carrick saw Michah Hamilton join Middlesbrough for £3.5m from Manchester City.

But where do Middlesbrough rank in the Championship spending table this summer?

Where Middlesbrough rank in the Championship spending table this summer

Barring a £50m spend in the summer following their relegation from the Premier League in 2017, Boro have not been the biggest spenders in the division.

However, Steve Gibson has backed the club well so far in the current window and they are competing with the top sides in terms of transfers.

As was to be expected, it is one of the recently relegated teams who top the list for most money paid out this summer, as per Transfermarkt.

Burnley have paid out a staggering £36m so far this summer, with half of that on new striker Mike Tresor from Genk.

The Clarets have nearly double the expenditure of any other side in the Championship, with Leeds United second with £17.75m.

Coventry City claim third place with £12.75m, and Carrick’s Middlesbrough are currently fourth with £10.58m paid out for players.

Middlesbrough are expected to spend some more money

While Boro are currently fourth in the Championship spending table this summer, they may leap frog Coventry very soon.

This comes as Middlesbrough are set to sign Tommy Conway from Bristol City this week.

News emerged during Boro’s League Cup meeting with Leeds that they will pay the Robins £4.5m for the striker’s services, which would increase their spending to £15.08m.

The incomings are not expected to stop at Conway, however, with Alex Bangura’s injury meaning Middlesbrough are looking to sign a left-back this summer and could explore the loan market to do so.

Boro’s chances of signing Ryan Giles have taken a hit following the latest update from Hull City owner Acun Ilicali, but there is still time to find an alternative.

Outside of a new left-back, Carrick may wish to add another centre-back to his squad before deadline day.

Dael Fry and Daragh Leninhan continue to suffer fitness issues, leaving Boro short of options in that area.

Jonny Howson filled in at the back against Leeds but he picked up an injury of his own at Elland Road.
