Micah Hamilton became Middlesbrough’s fifth signing of the 2024 summer transfer window last week.

Boro kicked off the current window in hectic fashion, signing three new first-team players before pre-season had begun.

Luke Ayling, Aidan Morris, and Delano Burgzorg all arrived at the Riverside Stadium on permanent deals.

The trio were followed through the door by 16-year-old Harley Hunt, who has since linked up with the club’s academy.

Following Hunt’s signing, the Teessiders went pretty quiet on the transfer front until last week.

Middlesbrough are expected to sign Tommy Conway from Bristol City to bolster their striker ranks.

And on Friday, August 9th, Micah Hamilton joined Boro from Manchester City for a fee of £3.5m, including add-ons.

Boro News understands Manchester City have a buy-back clause in the Hamilton deal, which will see the Sky Blues pay somewhere around £16m if they want to bring the Englishman back to the Etihad Stadium.

How Michael Carrick plans to use Micah Hamilton at Middlesbrough

Three of Middlesbrough’s 2024 summer signings featured in their opening-day win over Swansea City.

Aidan Morris was in from the off alongside Luke Ayling, while Delano Burgzorg came off the bench in the second half.

Hamilton, who had only signed the day prior, was in the matchday squad but did not make an appearance.

However, the 20-year-old is expected to feature when Middlesbrough face Leeds United in the League Cup on Wednesday evening.

Ahead of the game, as per Teesside Live, Michael Carrick has been discussing how he plans to use Hamilton, hinting he will not just play on the right wing, as he was expected to do.

He said: “I think that’s the beauty of Micah, and most of the players across that forward line – they can play two or three different roles.

“Micah can play left or right no problem. He can play as a ten. I’m not going to pigeonhole at this stage.

“I think the obvious one this early will be playing off the right, but really, I don’t just see him in that role.

“We want to be patient and help him settle in because it’s a big change for him coming here. I think we’ll see him develop as the season goes on. But, like a number of the players, I certainly wouldn’t put him down for just one spot.”

What is Micah Hamilton best position for Middlesbrough

At present, it makes the most sense for Middlesbrough to use Hamilton on the right wing.

Marcus Forss is still sidelined following an injury picked up last term, leaving Isaiah Jones as Boro’s only fit senior right winger.

Sonny Finch played out of position on the right in pre-season but his ability to play regularly in the Championship remains up in the air.

However, Hamilton could prove useful for the North East outfit in a few other areas as well.

A Manchester City expert has provided an insight into Hamilton, telling Boro News he has largely played out on the left or as a number 10 for the Sky Blues.

Finn Azaz is Carrick’s main central attacking midfielder right now but he continues to struggle for form since his move from Plymouth Argyle.

In turn, Hamilton could provide some quality competition for Azaz through the middle and potentially on the left for Riley McGree.
