The new Middlesbrough signing has had some interesting things to say this week.

Tommy Conway became Boro’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window on Friday, August 16th.

Conway has joined Middlesbrough from Bristol City on a permanent basis for a fee of £4.5m.

The striker will bring plenty of goals and a high attacking work rate to the Riverside Stadium, and provide healthy competition for Emmanuel Latte Lath.

Conway joins Luke Ayling, Aidan Morris, Delano Burgzorg, Aidan Morris, Micah Hamilton and Harley Hunt as the sixth new addition for Michael Carrick this summer.

The 22-year-old scored 10 in 39 games during the 2023/24 campaign for the Robins – a tally that should only increase now he is playing in a much better team.

After signing, Conway revealed one Middlesbrough star played a key role in his transfer during a sit-down interview with MFC.co.uk.

But there are a few more things you may have missed from that chat…

Why Tommy Conway joined Middlesbrough

Finding a prolific striker can often prove a tough task for most clubs, as Boro have learned in the past.

Latte Lath and Chuba Akpom have excelled at the Riverside in the past two seasons before that though, the Teessiders struggled to find a top centre-forward.

But with Conway now at Carrick’s disposal, the Championship outfit are very well-stocked up front.

Burnley and Hull City wanted Conway but the player has now revealed why he chose to join Middlesbrough.

He said: “I think from the moment I spoke to the gaffer I think I knew straight away I wanted to come here and then it was about being patient and waiting for the right time for the clubs to agree between themselves and like I said I’m just thankful it’s over the line now and I’m in this shirt.”

What Hayden Hackney told Tommy Conway about Michael Carrick

As already covered, Hackney played a key role in convincing Conway to move to Boro.

Though Hackney is English, he played for Scotland at youth level alongside Middlesbrough’s new signing.

In turn, Conway turned to the midfielder to get the lowdown on the Teessiders and their manager.

Conway said: “[Hackney told him] Just like what the gaffer is like on and off the pitch, he’s a really humble guy and just wants the players to get better.

“He just wants to do well. Really sold the area to me as well, said this is a nice pleasant area, nice and private. So I think all around on and off the pitch, it really added up for me.”

Tommy Conway reveals his journey in football

Conway is Scottish but was born in Taunton, a county town in Somerset.

Before moving to Middlesbrough, the striker spent his entire career to date with Bristol City.

And in his sit-down interview with Boro, revealed he actually left home at 15 to pursue his footballing career.

He said: “I was at Bristol City since I was seven years old, come all the way through the Academy and then eventually left home at 15 when I signed my scholarship there.

“So then went on from there, broke into the first team and I had two full seasons and I felt like the time was right to move on and Middlesbrough was there with the perfect next step for me.”
