Middlesbrough have submitted a bid for Bristol City striker Tommy Conway and the details of that offer have emerged.

With the backing of owner Steve Gibson, Middlesbrough got the bulk of their summer transfer business done early.

Luke Ayling, Delano Burgzorg, and Aidan Morris linked up with the first-team squad ahead of pre-season, while Harley Hunt joined the club’s academy.

Boro’s transfer business has slowed down in recent weeks but could pick up in the final month of the transfer window.

Middlesbrough have offered €1.75m for 18-year-old midfielder, Yusuf Sertkaya following his starring display at the U19 Euros with Turkey this summer.

Boro News reported on July 18th that Middlesbrough were looking at the foreign market to strengthen on the left wing this summer.

A week later, it was reported that Middlesbrough are set to rival Sunderland for a European winger.

More recently, the Teessiders have been linked with Bristol City striker, Tommy Conway.

Details of Middlesbrough bid for Tommy Conway

Conway was a regular feature for Bristol City in the 2023/24 Championship season.

He scored 10 league goals in 39 games and was their top scorer in all competitions with 12.

However, the 21-year-old’s future at Ashton Gate is now in doubt after he turned down a new contract and is now in the final 12 months of his current deal.

The forward is currently training with the Robins’ U21 side, a decision which has seemingly given Middlesbrough confidence to pursue a deal.

Reports of Boro opening initial talks for Conway emerged on Monday and Bristol Live have now provided a further update on the situation.

Boro are believed to have submitted a £5m bid for the forward, which is thought to be heavily incentivised.

While spending less money this summer would be good for Middlesbrough, Bristol City want more in guaranteed payments to allow Conway to depart.

Middlesbrough should not budge on Tommy Conway offer

It is easy to see why City want more money upfront for Conway this summer, especially as they are trying to sign Burnley’s Scott Twine after his impressive loan spell in the second half of 2023/24.

However, it is Michael Carrick and co. who hold all of the cards when it comes to a move for Conway.

The player clearly does not want to remain at Bristol City after turning down a new contract recently.

And with Conway already in the final 12 months of his contract, Bristol will have to sell this summer if they are to garner any sort of meaningful fee for the player.

Furthermore, while Conyway could prove a useful asset for Middlesbrough, they should not be desperate to sign him.

Emmanuel Latte Lath will lead the line for the North East outfit in 2024/25 so Conway, or any other striker, will be a backup option.

Josh Coburn and Delano Burgzorg can also fill in for the Ivorian if needed next term. They may not be as competent as Conway, but there is no need for Boro to be bullied into a deal with a month of the window still left and plenty of striking options already at the club.
