Middlesbrough could now make a late transfer U-turn to bring in a Premier League player on Friday evening.

After such a well-organised summer transfer window, Middlesbrough have had quite a messy end to Deadline Day.

The main transfer saga has centered around a potential outgoing, though Emmanuel Latte Lath is now set to stay at Middlesbrough after transfer interest from Premier League outfit Ipswich Town.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick has been trying to reinforce his defence ahead of the meeting with Cardiff City on Saturday.

Boro have four centre-backs out injured at present, with George McCormick the latest casualty after twisting his ankle in the 5-0 loss to Stoke City on Tuesday evening.

Now, with less than two hours remaining of the window, the Teessiders could finally sign a new centre-half.

Middlesbrough move for George Edmundson back on

Middlesbrough were linked with George Edmundson earlier this week as a potential option to strengthen Carrick’s back-four.

Going into deadline day, it looked as though the North East outfit were set to complete a move for the Ipswich man.

However, it then emerged that Middlesbrough were unlikely to sign Edmundson and that the Reds could end up playing the next six months of the campaign without a new centre-back arriving.

Now, in a very late transfer twist, Dominic Shaw has reported on X/Twitter that a deal for the 27-year-old is now back on.

He wrote: “Boro loan move for Ipswich defender George Edmundson is now back on”

Why have Middlesbrough changed their stance on George Edmundson

There are a number of reasons why Middlesbrough may now have gone back in for Edmundson.

With Boro still sweating over the fitness of several defenders, including Rav van den Berg and Dael Fry, the club could have got a new update on their current centre-backs and decided a new player was indeed needed.

There may also have been a change in the structure of the deal, with Ipswich now potentially more willing to agree to Boro’s terms.

It is not yet known if Edmundson will join on loan or permanently, but the fact Boro look set to add another centre-back to their ranks should please fans.
