Middlesbrough have some stiff competition for one of their summer transfer targets.

With just five days of the transfer window to go, Middlesbrough are still in the market for more additions.

Tommy Conway has strengthened Boro’s centre-forward position while Micah Hamilton and Delano Burgzorg will provide some quality depth on the flanks.

Elsewhere, Aidan Morris has impressed for Middlesbrough in the centre of the park since his transfer from Columbus Crew.

Luke Ayling was one of Boro’s best players against Portsmouth over the weekend as well.

However, at least one more name is expected to come through the door in the final week of the transfer window.

Middlesbrough want to sign a new left-back as competition for Lukas Engel and appear to have taken a step forward in that pursuit over the weekend after Neto Borges was linked to Boro on Saturday.

Sheffield United and Stoke City want Middlesbrough transfer target

Elsewhere, it was reported last week that Middlesbrough hold an interest in Tom Cannon of Leicester City.

The striker has only made 16 appearances for the Foxes and the news last week suggested he could depart the King Power Stadium once Steve Cooper signs Jordan Ayew from Crystal Palace.

But now, it appears two EFL clubs have leaped ahead of Boro in the race for Cannon.

Alan Nixon, writing on his Patreon, revealed Sheffield United and Stoke City are both trying to raise the funds required to pry him away from Leicester.

He wrote: “Leicester City are looking to SELL striker Tom Cannon – with Sheffield United and Stoke City trying to raise the cash.

“Foxes have decided to cash in on Cannon a year after signing him from Everton and they will seek a similar £7 million fee.”

Why Middlesbrough do not need to sign Tom Cannon

A Championship rival looks set to benefit from Leicester’s decision to sell Cannon, which is something of a blow to Middlesbrough.

However, Boro do not need really need to sign Cannon, especially given how little he has played over the last year.

Emmanuel Latte Lath remains Michael Carrick’s first-choice striker and he now has some excellent backup in Tommy Conway.

Conway came off the bench against Portsmouth over the weekend and scored his first-ever Boro goal, netting from 12 yards after winning the penalty.

Behind that duo, Josh Coburn gives the Teessiders something different and even if he leaves, Delano Burgzorg is more than capable of playing up front.
