A Middlesbrough player could be on his way to a Championship rival on Friday.

We are yet to reach midday but it has already been a very busy news day for the Teessiders.

It was claimed yesterday that Middlesbrough want to sign Tom Cannon from Leicester City and that they had made an offer for the striker along with the likes of Sunderland and Sheffield United.

A loan move to Millwall for Josh Coburn has also been touted in the last 24 hours, with the striker now third-choice for Michael Carrick in his role.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough want to sign a centre-back on Deadline Day and Luke Ayling has already told Boro why they should sign Liam Cooper, who is currently a free agent and attracting interest from Derby County.

On the centre-back front, Middlesbrough are confident about signing George Edmundson from Ipswich Town.

Blackburn Rovers, Hull City and a couple of other clubs want the Premier League stopper but he appears to be on his way to Teesside.

Championship manager hints at late move for Middlesbrough man

While Boro will be glad to finally get a new centre-back through the door, they could also move on a player today.

As mentioned above, Millwall want to sign Coburn on loan for the 2024/25 campaign.

Now though, Preston North End manager Paul Heckingbottom has been quizzed on his side’s interest in the forward and did not rule out a move, as per Teesside Live.

He said: “I know him as a player. Would he fit us? Yeah. Is it something we can get done and are we in for him? I wouldn’t tell you, because yeah, there are lots of players. Some of their situations suit us down to the ground and we might have a chance of getting them. But then, are they the right players for us?

“Some players who we really, really want, it may be a pipedream. We may not get anywhere near it, but we’ve got to try. So yeah, there are lots who we are speaking to and about. It’s pointless going through them all, because the moment I say yes to one, there’s no need.

“There is lots of work going on and lots of conversations. We just have to be ready for every scenario, both in the ones we can do independently – but we’ve still got to compete and perform and do well to try and do that. Then, any which may present themselves.”

Michael Carrick has tough Josh Coburn decision to make

Coburn joined Middlesbrough from Sunderland’s academy in 2018 and became a regular feature for the club last season.

Carrick dubbed the 21-year-old ‘terrific’ at the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign, as per Teesside Live.

He went on to score five in 21 Championship outings that term but his game time was limited due to injury.

Coburn was expected to be backup to Latte Lath in 2024/25 but the arrival of Tommy Conway has changed that.

The Englishman still has the potential to be a top striker and he does offer Middlesbrough something different due to his physical nature.

But unless Carrick is willing to give him more game time going forward, it would be best for Coburn’s development if he were allowed to leave Boro on loan today.
