Middlesbrough have confirmed a second signing on Friday evening.

Boro left it very late to do any transfer business on Friday but Michael Carrick has strengthened his first-team squad with some new arrivals.

After little activity on the incomings front all day, the Teessiders confirmed their first signing of the day at 10pm.

Ben Doak has joined Middlesbrough on a season-long loan from Premier League outfit Liverpool.

It was an unexpected transfer but one Boro are said to be very excited about.

As per Teesside Live, Liverpool were expected to keep the teenager at Anfield for the current campaign but the addition of Federico Chiesa from Juventus to Arne Slot’s squad opened the door for Doak to depart.

Middlesbrough suffer George Edmundson transfer drama

With a deal for Doak wrapped up, Boro fans were no doubt eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new centre-back.

The Reds have been looking to strengthen in that position over the last week following a spate of injury issues to the likes of Rav van den Berg and George McCormick.

Middlesbrough were linked with George Edmundson earlier this week but the club’s pursuit of the centre-back has been pretty dramatic.

After positive indications that a deal would be completed on Friday morning, it then emerged that Boro were unlikely to sign Edmundson.

With just a few hours of deadline day remaining, however, a move for the Ipswich Town man was back on.

Middlesbrough confirm George Edmundson signing

And despite the clock ticking past 11pm, Boro did eventually get a deal for the stopper over the line.

However, the Teesside outfit announced the 27-year-old in rather cheeky fashion.

The club posted a link to a transfer round-up piece, in which they confirmed Edmundson’s signing right at the bottom of the page.

They wrote: “And in the final minutes of the summer window, Boro added a further defender with George Edmundson signing on loan from Ipswich Town. We’re just checking you’re paying attention.”
